When Slurry is through permeable strata under pressure, will happen filtrate reduce phenomenon, the water of the slurry separated go into stratigraphy and left cement particles, this phenomenon is called "Fluid loss".
If cannot control the fluid loss, will produce a series of serious consequences, leading to failure of construction. With the water is decreasing, slurry density is increases gradually, make the performance of the slurry (such as rheological property, thickening time etc)is deviate from the original design, if too much water go into the stratigraphy, the will be unable to pump the cement slurry, make the cementing failure, caused heavy losses.
Fluid loss agent is used to decrease the slurry filtration, the purpose as below:
1) to prevent early dehydration when slurry is in permeable stratigraphy, especially in the late period when cementing;
2) to protect water sensitive stratigraphy;
3) improve the squeeze cementing operation.
The most common fluid loss agents are include in: granular materials, water-soluble high molecular materials, emulsion material, acrylamide polymers etc.
