Why "barrel" ? Interesting history of the crude oil's unit

In 1860， the crude oil the United States have been taken in by special container in the beginning of exploitation. They used all bottles the can found to taken to hold the oil. There was a kind of whiskey barrels which is more favored by oil dealers. The capacity of barrels is about 40 gallons. In order to make the customers to satisfied, the oil dealers added 2gallons per barrel. Since then, it’s 42 gallons that became United State petroleum industry’s unwritten standards. This unit has been used ever since, 42 gallons is equal to about 159 liters.
According to the California Association of energy Statistics, the crude oil have been refined, the 50% crude oil became gasoline.
